Well, it's now official. At least according to a Canadian survey reported by the Vancouver Sun. They state that 62 percent of Android users are likely to have sex on the first date, compared to 57percent of iPhone users and 48 percent of Blackberry users.
Does this mean Android users are sexier then iPhone users? Or does it actually mean that iPhone users are more loyal people less likely to change partners or phones.
We can read all sorts of things into such a survey, and many of the posts I have read do just that.
Mind you, the survey was conducted interviewing 1,000 users on "match.com"... so I reckon these people are more likely to be a little more promiscuous then if the survey was interviewing 1,000 members of "LinkedIn" or similar.
You can be the judge... are you sexier because you have a "Smart Phone"
Where do we get this this rule of thumb from. Is this accurate?
I am talking about electricity consumption, not all energy consumption.
So, where did the 10% come from? VERY good question. The 10% figure came from a detailed study of standby power consumption back in 2005.
The principles and appliance usage still stands. A total of 8000 individual appliances from 120 homes were recorded during the survey. Appliances were recorded in all relevant standby modes, such as active standby, passive standby or off mode. The results showed that the average standby consumption for 2005 was found to be 92.2 Watts per household, or some 807 kWh per year. This equates to around 10.7% of residential electricity consumption in 2005.
The above graph shows the Stanby power used by different appliances.
If you feel you want to do something about the amount of wasted electricity (not to mention the cost) then have a look at theEco Switch, a simple an easy way to reduce or eliminate the wastage of standy power.
We all wonder why some people seem to be lucky and have success, while others are plagued by bad luck.
Why do some people seem to have all the luck? Why are the successful?
I think it is because these people have an open mind. They are willing to explore new ideas... they are willing to at least listen and not put up a barrier every time a new idea comes their way.
I find it interesting when talking to retailers and I hear them say "I can't do that", or "we can't sell those here". These are the retailers that seem to be down on the "luck". Their shops look tired... they look tired. It's not necessarily their fault as we all too often hear about the doom and gloom around us. Retail is flat. A new large shopping centre has just opened down the road. Online shopping is growing. Interest rates are going up. All of these negatives have an impact on our state of mind.
Is there a solution? I think there is. Surround yourself with positive vibes. hang out with upbeat and happy people. Keep an open mind and look for the pros, not the cons.
A positive attitude can work wonders, for you and the people around you.
Keep an open mind... it works for the successful people I know.
If you are one of those people that likes to use their mobile phone to talk to family and friends, or call up to make a restaurant booking, phone the local cinema to find out what's playing... then maybe you need to think seriously about your Mobile Phone Plan.
There are plenty of offers in the market for all sorts of deals, but at the end of the day, the best deal is the one that suits you best.
How does $40 sound?
Pretty good when you consider for only $40 you can have UNLIMITED talk and UNLIMITED Text for 30 days. And just because you probably use a Smart Phone to make all these calls, how about an included 3GB of data as well? That's on top of the free access to FaceBook and Twitter.
Sounds pretyy good now doesn't it?
So all you retailers... isn't it time you made sure you stock the Boost Mobile $40 SIM Pack?
This is an electronic payment system for smart phones that communicates with the new EFTPOS Terminals being rolled out by banks into retail channels.
Essentially, you are able to have all your credit card details and personal information stored on your mobile smart phone using an App. Just like you can simply "flash" your chipped credit card at a retailer now and the payment is deducted quickly and automatically, NFC via a mobile wallet will take this even further giving the consumer control over a number of credit cards or accounts. This clever technology will eventually mean there will be no reason to carry a wallet full of credit cards or cash, and once again the humble mobile phone becomes even more entwined and entangled into our lives.
Last year in May, I said this new technology would be introduced in a short period of time to Australia, and now it is a reality. We are already using "Chipped" Credit Cards for swipe payments and the new NFC technolgy is now starting to appear in Smart Phones this year.
Google isn't the only one developing Apps and NFC for payments, as Apple is also rumoured to be developing the same type of technology for their popular iPhone.
The rexently launched Google Samsung Galaxy Nexus Smart Phone has a smart chip included to allow the use of NFC, and HTC have just launched the "Velocity" smartphone in Australia with NFC included.
I welocome your thoughts about NFC payments, and eliminating the need for a wallet full of cards and cash? Will we also carry our ID in our smartphones? No need for a driver's licence? Are we safe? is Big Brother watching?
There are many questions around this technology, but at the end of the day I believe most of us will be using Near Field Communication (NFC) on our smart phones to make purchases.
Australians are often the first to embrace new technology, so I feel we will jump on board with NFC too.
The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas set a new record, increasing attendance on last year by 10% to reach an amazing 153,000.
So how big is the famous CES show. Try 3,100 exhibitors, 153,000 attendees and 173,000 square metres of space.
There are many hits and misses at a show of this size, but one thing is for sure. It is the launch pad for many new and improved consumer electronics products set to make an impact over the coming months as manufacturers strive to bring the latest gizmos to market before their competitors.
However, there really doesn't seem to be anything that is groundbreaking. Mostly the new products seen this year are evolutions of electronics products that are readily available now.
Tablets get lighter and faster. Mobile Phones get faster and more highly specced. Battery life gets extended. Television pictures get brighter and definition gets higher. Size does matter, but it's about how thin manufacturers can make the latest TV, Smart Phone or Tablet, all while ensuring the camera is better, the battery lasts longer and the user experience is improved.
3D TV will improve as the need for bulky glasses are eliminated. As a matter of fact, LG have already launched a 3D Mobile Phone with dual lens camera that allows the user to take high definition 3D photos and videos and vew them on the phone in glorious 3d without the need for additional glasses. I like to call this technology "Naked 3D". Now that would be something special !

You know, there has been a lot of talk lately about online shopping, the impact it is having on bricks and mortar retailers and the number of consumers shopping all over the world from the comfort of their lounge rooms.
This may well be the truth, and in fact I know quite a few people that shop online for a variety of items ranging from shoes and clothing to gifts and food. Amongst the people I know, they mostly shop online for clothing where there appears to be significant savings for the consumer. But I must say, I find it amusing when a pair of shoes have been ordered and the purchaser discovers they don't fit. Most of the time they don't bother returning them. They simply pass them onto a friend.
Electronics is another item that we often see advertised on line and even Gerry Harvey from Harvey Norman has joined the ranks of Online Merchants. He seems to have given up the fight against them and decided better to join them. Good retailers need an online presence more than ever now. Even if it is a FaceBook page to start with so you can communicate with your customers about specials and local events. Making an effort now to start an online presence may seem like a hassle, but it will pay off down the road as you learn to combine good physical and online retailing to meet the growing and changing demands of tomorrows consumer.
From my observations there are certainly some bargains to be had by shopping or comparing items online, but when it comes to technology products the perceived savings are just that... precieved !
Yes, you can find a product for about 10% to 20% cheaper on an online shop, but once you factor in freight and handling costs, credit card charges, and worst still, the wait for your brand new purchase to arrive on your door step (or at the post office for collection) then suddenly that online bargain isn't all it was cracked up to be.
All too often the product may arrive and prove to be not quite what was expected. Or items end up being out of stock and take weeks to arrive.
Don't get me wrong. Online Merchants will continue to grow, and some will service and prosper and others will disappear as quickly as they arrived. Just like good and bad retailers today in shopping centres or on strip shops. The good retailers prosper while the bad ones complain.
I still believe that the bricks and mortar retailer has a strong place in our society, offering consumers instant cratification, competitive pricing, expert advice and a personal touch that cannot be enjoyed while shopping online.
The trick is retailers need to continue to improve their level of service and range of products. It's the personal touch and service that will win shoppers. Everyone likes to feel good about themselves and the decisions they make; and a good retailer ensures that feeling takes place inside their bricks and mortar business.
If you have some thoughts aboutonline versus bricks and mortar, I would love to hear from you.
Very interesting article James. I have to say I am a bit of an online shopping addict myself however this changed a bit over christmas when I was given a Country Road store voucher. In my usual form I jumped online to select what I wanted only to find
that they don't accept the vouchers online. Off to the store I trudged... But, I must admit that it was the most fun and rewarding shopping experience I have had in aages! The personal attention given to me by the girl in the store made my day and I left feeling
completely satisfied with my purchases. I even ended up spending a little more than what I had on the voucher. So, while I will continue to be an online addict, from now on when I do have a chance I will definitely be shopping instore and good customer service
always gets a sale out of me :-)
The people at Microsoft have been relatively quiet for a while now, as the Tech Market seems totally focused on Apple's IOS and Google's Android opertating systems.
Interestingly, Apple uses 2 opertaing systems, one computers and one for Tablets and Smart Phones.
Android uses the one system for Tablets and Smart Phones, while syncing with PC's running Mac or Windows.
So... what about the upcoming Windows 8 ? Microsoft have been sitting in the back grownd building what looks like a very clever operating system to challenge both Google and Apple in 2012.
Windows 8 is designed from the bottom up and is destined to run on Smart Phones, Tablets and Slates, PC's and laptops. It is very much a cross platform opertaing system with full touch and keyboard support.
Google's Nexus phone has been a long time coming to the shores of Australia.
Produced by Samsung, and known in OZ as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, this smart phone is pitched at the high level consumer looking for the best of the best.
What makes this phone special are two key features that set it apart from all other smartphones in the market today.
1. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first phone in Australia to come loaded with the much anticipated Android Icecream Sandwich opertaing system. This new OS is the pinacle of Google's popular system for smart phones bringing a better consumer experience, faster speeds and improved muti-tasking. Everything the high end user needs.
2. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is also the first SmartPhone in Australia to sport a "Near Field Communication" (NFC) chip. This brings a whole new technology to SmartPhones, allowing you to use your Galaxy Nexus as your credit card, paying for items at wave and pay outlets, which are becoming more prevalent in the Australian market.
You can read more about this technology in an earlier post of mine here.
What's all this cloud computing about? Have you heard about the cloud but don't really know what's going on.
Nothing to do with the recent rain, and the thing about this cloud is it continues to grow but does not cast any shadows.
Recently in the news was the announcement that HP were to build a data centre in Sydney's west, investing $119 million in an Eastern Creek 13.4 Ha site.
This all means, that as data connections get faster with the role out of the NBN, the introduction of LTE 4G Mobile phone data and the continued uptake of the "SmartPhone" and tablet in Australia and the world, cloud computing will become a reality for all of us. It's all about storing our data in the cloud.... or at least in data centres like the one planned by HP for Sydney's West.
Streaming music to your mobile device, editing an Excel Spreadsheet in real time while sharing the same spreadsheet with others, or simply storing your holiday pictures so they don't get lost are all a reality now and will continue to become more prevalent as data centres (The Cloud), mobile devices and internet connection speeds grow.
The typical office that is hard wired via blue data cable internally connects to their internal server at 100Mps and a typical wireless connection in the same environment or at home connects at 42Mps. This sort of speed is becoming available on Mobile devices with the introduction of 4G, so when you can connect at speeds like this while out and about, it's easy to imagine a world where everything we want is in the cloud and accessible when we want it in seconds.
That's what Google Docs is about. That's what streaming music is about. FaceBook, Twitter and other social media is all about the cloud.
It's all there now, and will all be there in the future... just more!
