Windows 8 looks to close the Gap James Simadas - Wednesday, December 28, 2011

Windows 8 looks to Close the Gap

The people at Microsoft have been relatively quiet for a while now, as the Tech Market seems totally focused on Apple's IOS and Google's Android opertating systems.

Interestingly, Apple uses 2 opertaing systems, one computers and one for Tablets and Smart Phones.

Android uses the one system for Tablets and Smart Phones, while syncing with PC's running Mac or Windows.

So... what about the upcoming Windows 8 ?  Microsoft have been sitting in the back grownd building what looks like a very clever operating system to challenge both Google and Apple in 2012.

Windows 8 is designed from the bottom up and is destined to run on Smart Phones, Tablets and Slates, PC's and laptops. It is very much a cross platform opertaing system with full touch and keyboard support.

Galaxy Nexus makes it to Australia James Simadas - Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Galaxy Nexus Makes it to Australia

Google's Nexus phone has been a long time coming to the shores of Australia.

Produced by Samsung, and known in OZ as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, this smart phone is pitched at the high level consumer looking for the best of the best.

What makes this phone special are two key features that set it apart from all other smartphones in the market today.

    1. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first phone in Australia to come loaded with the much anticipated Android Icecream Sandwich opertaing system. This new OS is the pinacle of Google's popular system for smart phones bringing a better consumer experience, faster speeds and improved muti-tasking. Everything the high end user needs.

    2. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is also the first SmartPhone in Australia to sport a "Near Field Communication" (NFC) chip. This brings a whole new technology to SmartPhones, allowing you to use your Galaxy Nexus as your credit card, paying for items at wave and pay outlets, which are becoming more prevalent in the Australian market.

You can read more about this technology in an earlier post of mine here.

Google Docs in the Cloud James Simadas - Friday, December 09, 2011

Google Docs in the Cloud

What's all this cloud computing about? Have you heard about the cloud but don't really know what's going on.

Nothing to do with the recent rain, and the thing about this cloud is it continues to grow but does not cast any shadows.

Recently in the news was the announcement that HP were to build a data centre in Sydney's west, investing $119 million in an  Eastern Creek 13.4 Ha site.

This all means, that as data connections get faster with the role out of the NBN, the introduction of LTE 4G Mobile phone data and the continued uptake of the "SmartPhone" and tablet in Australia and the world, cloud computing will become a reality for all of us. It's all about storing our data in the cloud.... or at least in data centres like the one planned by HP for Sydney's West.

Streaming music to your mobile device, editing an Excel Spreadsheet in real time while sharing the same spreadsheet with others, or simply storing your holiday pictures so they don't get lost are all a reality now and will continue to become more prevalent as data centres (The Cloud), mobile devices and internet connection speeds grow.

The typical office that is hard wired via blue data cable internally connects to their internal server at 100Mps and a typical wireless connection in the same environment or at home connects at 42Mps. This sort of speed is becoming available on Mobile devices with the introduction of 4G, so when you can connect at speeds like this while out and about, it's easy to imagine a world where everything we want is in the cloud and accessible when we want it in seconds.

That's what Google Docs is about. That's what streaming music is about. FaceBook, Twitter and other social media is all about the cloud.

It's all there now, and will all be there in the future... just more!
