Expanding your Memory Simon Davidson - Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Expanding your Memory

For a few months now we have been toying with the idea of changing our USB Flash Drives and Memory Cards.

Memory is a highly consumable product, be it for presentations, storing photo albums, music and video collections or even applications for smart phones, pretty much 90% of consumers need some form of flash memory or memory card.

What we have been looking for in a Memory brand is:

- Quality Build
- Quality Packaging
- Fast Speed to keep up with today's cameras
- Strong Brand Recognition
- Affordable Retail Pricing
- High Retailer Margin

The one brand that ticked all these boxes is SanDisk. SanDisk is the worlds largest supplier of Flash Memory. Their products are highly recognisable, meaning consumers will know they are buying a quality product and with our 4GB Flash Drives, Micro SD and Memory Cards starting @ $9.95 RRP they are well priced for the "Route" channel.

Star Wars gets Angry! Simon Davidson - Friday, October 12, 2012

Star Wars gets Angry!

For a film series that first came out in 1977, The Star Wars franchise sure has some legs and some even bigger fans.

I for one went to a party dressed in drag as Princess Leia back in the day, now that was a party…

With six movies in the series, books, merchandise and dozens of games already, you would be forgiven for thinking it’s popularity would surely be coming to an end now.

You may be forgiven, but you would also be wrong.

9th November marks the date for the Australian release of the latest tie-up with this epic space opera franchise and the latest game crazy Angry Birds.

Launched in December 2010 Angry Birds was an instant success with 50 million downloads before its first anniversary in December 2011.

Currently the Angry Birds franchise has three games in the iTunes top 25 Paid Apps, 1. Bad Piggies HD, 9. Angry Birds Space HD and 25. Angry Birds HD.

With the track record that these two franchises already have, we know this is going to be BIG. To take advantage of this we already have a range of Angry Birds iPhone 4/4s cases @ $24.95 RRP and Angry Birds Tablet Sleaves @ $29.95 RRP, these are both @ 50% margin.

Typing on the Go! Simon Davidson - Monday, April 23, 2012

Typing on the go made easy!

Tablets have been in the market for several years now with growth of this product line mostly been contained to the iPad’s and Android tablets such as our Pre-Paid range of Optus Pre-Paid Galaxy 10.1 @ $649 RRP, Optus Pre-Paid Dell Streak 7” Tablet @ $279 RRP and our Optus Acer Iconia A501 Tablet @ $519 RRP.

However trending suggests there is still a lot of growth in this category.  (See graph below)

Personally I love tablets, they don’t replace a laptop but I do use my iPad a lot. My local blockbuster closed down a few months back so I now download movies on iTunes and even TV shows that I may have missed due to travel or programming clashes.

I watch these programmes and read the SMH on my iPad during flights, which makes travel time much more enjoyable now. I also use it for social media, doing my online banking, playing games, making my footy tips and I have even used it to create my family tree with the ancestry.com app.

But the thing that I hate most is using my tablet to type on. When you start to type the keyboard takes up half the screen which makes long emails frustrating when you need to spell check as much as I do.

However we have a few new solution to this problem in stock. Firstly we have the Laser Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard @ $59.95 RRP, it is compatible with computers, tablets, smartphones and even PS3. It also has an integrated touchpad, multimedia shortcut keys and is portable and lightweight.

We also have the Blue Tooth Qwerty Keyboard @ $49.95 which is a waterproof, dustproof and washable Mini Bluetooth Flexible Silicone Keyboard, that is the perfect portable companion for your Smartphone, iPad or Android Tablet! Made from flexible and lightweight silicone, you can simply roll it up the mini keyboard and take it with you wherever you go!

Seizing the WiFi Opportunity Simon Davidson - Monday, January 30, 2012

Seizing the Wi-Fi Opportunity

Is internet Wi-Fi surcharges in Australian hotels just a rip off, or is it also an opportunity for local retailers?

Personally I see it as an annoyance for myself, but an opportunity also in the same breath.

I tend to spend at least 70 nights a year in motels and hotels, mostly within Australia, but also overseas during holidays with my wife. The Australian stays are made up of regional trips to visit all our great retailers and also to attend industry conferences, trade shows and awards nights. Some areas are metro visits, but some are also very remote locations.

What 80% of these Australian motel and hotels have in common is NO free access to Wi-Fi internet. Whereas 80% of their counter parts around the world, actually give you free Wi-Fi internet access, where you can skype your loved ones, post photos of your trip to the likes of facebook or myspace, research where you are going to go the next day and even download a movie on your tablet for the upcoming flight, train or bus trip.

I have been to hotels where they have charged as much as $24 a day for internet access in Australia.

With this in mind, it makes sense to be stocking products like our Optus Mobile Broadband that starts at $39 RRP with up to 1GB of data and 30days to use this within. Or even our Optus Wi-Fi mini modem for $89 RRP, that includes up to 6GB of data and can connect up to 5 devices at once. This is plenty of data for doing all those things I spoke of before and with 30 days expiry, is the idea product to sell to tourists.

If you are in a really touristy area, it makes sense to really highlight this type of product for the impulse sale and what better way than with a Optus Mobile Broadband dump bin.

Be on a winning Streak this Christmas Simon Davidson - Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Be on a winning Streak this Christmas

For many Australian families Thursday the 1st of December marks the date that Christmas trees are erected in lounge rooms across the country. With this date being only two days away, it is getting more important to find gifts to place under these illuminated trees.

If I had to choose a Top 5 of Jenlist Distributor products for Christmas it would look like this:

  1. Optus Pre-Paid Dell Streak 7” Android Tablet for $279 RRP
  2. Optus Pre-Paid Samsung Galaxy Gio  for $149 RRP (Android 2.3 Touch Screen Smart Phone)
  3. Xtime Stereo DJ Headset for $19.95 RRP (great stocking filler)
  4. Laser 7” Colour Screen Ebook Reader for $149.95 RRP (comes with 200 books pre-loaded)
  5. Olympus VG-140 14MP Camera for $99 (reduced from $149 RRP for Xmas Catalogue Only)

The number one product on my list is the NEW Optus Pre-Paid Dell Streak 7” Android Tablet for $279 RRP. This tablet is small enough to carry around, yet large enough to enjoy high-def videos on the road, in a plane or even on the couch. It is also great for Skype calls with cameras on both sides.

Its main features are:

  • - Full web experience with Adobe Flash
  • - 7” 800x 400 Gorilla Glass multi touch display

The tablet is also a 3G dual band device, which means you will receive superior coverage across the Optus network.
